Dentures over Implants
Procedure to be done in conjunction with an oral surgeon, periodontist or dentist
Dental implants may be an ideal option for you to consider if you’ve experienced problems securing your dentures in place or have concerns about your dentures moving and slipping. This is usually caused by a lack of bone (ridge) height to secure the dentures and is a common problem as we age. Moreover, if you have given up eating foods you enjoy, dentures over implants may be the best solution.
A dental implant is placed into your jawbone as a permanent anchor. Implants are like root replacements. Once implanted into your jaw, the bone and the implant integrate into one cohesive member and provide a stable and reliable anchor to which a denture can attach. The dental implant is placed by an oral surgeon, periodontist, or dentist. Two – six implants are placed to secure an upper or lower denture in place.
The implant-retained denture over implants is made by your denturist and is removable. This allows for improved hygiene and ease in cleaning dentures and dental implants.
Benefits for dentures over implants are:
- Stable dentures that do not move or slip when eating
- Increased preservation of bone
- Less food seepage under the denture
- Social interactions accomplished with confidence
- Less food seepage under the denture
- Decreased gum tissue shrinkage
- Superior aesthetics
- A feeling close to that of your natural teeth
While dentures over implants require the same routine checkups, occasional adjustment, and replacement after about five years, they are otherwise the closest thing in look and feel to natural teeth.
